Hole In The World

"‘Hole In The World’ is a eulogy for those who have lost a beloved one. With so many friends and loved ones passing on, I felt it was time to write a song to those who have left, and to those left behind. Yes, it’s a sorrowful song, but that’s one color in the pallet of life that is as real as any other, and needs to be expressed sometimes, as well.

I had been working with the words for this song for a few weeks and asked my good friend and songwriting partner Jim Kimo West (Grammy winning slack key recording artist and guitarist for Weird Al Yankovich) if he could come up with some music for the final lyric. As I have spent a lot of time working on lyrics these last few years and not keeping up with the music for all those words, I have called upon my handful of co-writers to see if they could create music for a particular lyric, or if they had a piece of music that might fit. Lucky for me, it’s been a most serendipitous experience as my buddies have stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park.

In this case Jim wrote music for the lyric but it just wasn’t working for me. Determined to get it right, he then wrote a 2nd piece of music and it fit perfectly. What a brother! After writing songs for well over 50 years, and bypassing 300 in number, its been refreshing to share the songwriting responsibilities with a few special friends, and the end result has been new music that I would never have created. This style of co-songwriting has given my last album and the current one in the works fertile ground for new ideas musically and I’m fired up and still excited as ever to keep writing and releasing new compositions. Michael Ruff’s keyboard parts on this track are something else as usual, but the ending, especiall,y sends me to another space and time."
