Too Sad

"Too Sad" is a piano ballad, simple and straight forward. There is a longing in the music. The piano so
lonely. The ensemble playing together brings comfort. The arrangements are sparse and emotions
restrained. Then the saxophone is allowed to cry, more hopeful than miserable.

The group with it’s home in Göteborg, Sweden, combines acoustic and electronic instruments to make music in a dreamland between genres. "Too Sad"" is the nd single from Erik Dahl Ensemble’s new album which is thematically examining sadness.

Erik’s own words about the song :

”'Too Sad' is music that’s there when needed. When I wrote it I needed it. The song was almost
complete already in the first draft. It was not a matter of trying to write something sad. I was just in a
mood and couldn’t stop my hands finding this music on the piano. Soft and sorrowful chords
wanted to make themselves heard. I was careful when arranging the music for the ensemble. I wanted to give space for the saxophone to express emotional content. So restraining the arrangement felt good, making it simple and sensible. The violin and the saxophone bounce around the melody in a way I really like. The clarinet has it’s own dance in the middle, almost like a folk song. Drums and bass give it all a calm backdrop.”
