David Massey’s latest offering, a 7 song EP, "Darkness At Dawn", includes 2 scorching political rockers as well as haunting reflections on climate change and religion and, of all things, a tender and optimistic wedding song.
David Massey has previously released 5 albums on his independent Poetic Debris label. "Island Creek" (2021), "Late Winter Light" (2018), "Until The Day Is Done" (2015), "So Many Roads" (2009) and "Blissful State Of Blue" (2004).
His mix of folk, rock, blues and bluegrass songs have wowed reviewers, as FolkWorld noted in 2019, “this Washington DC artist still hasn’t made his breakthrough, though each of his albums has been critically acclaimed”.
"Island Creek" peaked at # 14 on the Roots Music Report’s Top Country Albums Chart and # 11 on its Top Americana Country Albums Chart, the album was also at # 1 for 10 weeks on R.M.R.’s chart reflecting nationwide radio play of releases by Maryland artists. 2 of the tracks from "Until The Day Is Done" were in the R.M.R.’s Top 10 folk rock songs for most of the summer of 2016.
Massey, who describes himself as too lazy to travel or gig very often, plays occasional shows in the Washington DC area and on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He has assembled an extraordinary band consisting largely of the players on his CD's, all veterans of the Washington area music scene. Their versatility allows them to explore the variety of styles and genres reflected in Massey’s compositions, from swampy rockers to bluegrass inflected country rock to delicate ballads.
