Album Of The Week

"Instrumenteringen och spelglädjen är smittande, men trevligast blir det nog när en kvinna kommer in med en av de fagraste stämmorna jag har hört på länge, och en utmärkt kontrast till mannen vid mikrofonen, som förvisso låter som den perfekta Johnny Cash- och/eller Lee Hazlewood-kopian. Sammanfattningsvis ett band som till minst 100 procent skulle upplevas bäst på en scen. Dessutom en härlig pedal steel som förgyller lite här och där, och en massa harmoni utöver detta."

"Med en mörk röst och med sinne för härligt humoristiska och smått ironiska countrylåtar förmedlar Paul Arnusch i bandet en egen världsbild. Ungefär som om Cramps skulle möta Kinky Friedman. Här har låtarna kraftfulla titlar med stränga berättelser ur ett skönt humoristiskt perspektiv. Det är country i grunden, och tenderar kanske att hysa lite punkiga streckkoder i musiken. Nåväl, ett av de roligare albumen just nu."

"'Satan Is A Woman' består av 10 låtar, och nog vilar Lee Hazlewoods ande över den här anrättningen alltid. Ofta pratsjunger Bobby Tenderloin på samma vis och med liknande mörk röst som Hazlewood hade, mixen av western, country och pop är densamma, och när jag hörde fina 'Marigold' första gången var jag tvungen att kolla att det verkligen inte var en cover. Lee Hazlewood, med sin storhetstid på 60- och 70-talet, måste se ner från sin himmel och le stolt när han hör den här skivan. Nu låter inte alla låtar som att han har skrivit och sjungit dem, men tillräckligt många gör det för att associationerna inte ska kunna kopplas bort, om så bara för en minut. Och jag gillar resultatet!"

"In the end, it comes down to what’s here on this album, and overall, while I am not a complete fan of Lee Hazlewood, I am familiar with, and have enjoyed his overall work, as I did this album and not least, the underlying humour apparent in some of the songs. The title song, as an example, considers Satan as a woman, making moves to lead him astray, which leads the lyric towards a more macabre end in the murder ballad scenario. So it continues evocatively evoking an artist and his oeuvre with some thought and adeptness that has its own rewards and reasoning. Perhaps Bobby Tenderloin’s universe may explore different territories in the future, but this album is open to individual consideration and approval."

"Out of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, comes this interesting band, The Bobby Tenderloin Universe, a dark folk country band formed around Bobby Tenderloin, Paul Arnusch, Nathan Gray, and several other guests joining on a few songs on their 2nd album 'Satan Is A Woman'. It starts with the dark acoustic calm folk song-like title track, which is as close to Johnny Cash as you can possibly get. Bobby has an amazing low baritone voice that is dangerously close to Cash, but the music is a bit more diverse here and there, with a real country americana approach most of the time. It’s definitely a quality record you can easily listen to from start to finish without skipping. Check out this upcoming Canadian band!"
