"Darkwarm has been a keyword for the new album. Like the feeling when you're going through a good period even though you're depressed, or when you feel community as a loner."
After over 3 years, Thomas Jonsson returns on May 15th, 2026, with "Give Up Together", his 6th album as I'm Kingfisher. The album is released by Fading Trails Recordings with distribution by Secretly Distribution.
The squiggly jazz tinged Glue is now followed up with a more earthy and heavier tone. "Give Up Together" finds a straighter, more band dominated sound than in many years, with a dynamic, developed atmosphere. The dull americana songs are tensioned with quiet drums, distinctive electric guitars and large string mats, to occasionally be deconstructed into stripped down folk songs. The slow and monotonous, and the beautiful and elaborate, have always been distinctive features for Thomas, but he has never found stronger points of contact between the extremes than now.
"Your Dad's Bad Days", one of the album's most defining songs, can be heard in its entirety in the Swedish feature film 'Biodlaren', which is enjoying a wide theatrical release in mid April. Thomas also makes a cameo role in it and has contributed a string of other songs to the film, which was the opening film for this year's Gothenburg Film Festival. There it was awarded best Nordic film and the lead actor Adam Lundgren was awarded best actor.
Manifest winner I'm Kingfisher has toured a long list of countries with a long list of great artists. With an insistent and idiosyncratic angle on the americana genre, he has fit into many contexts. He has toured with Courtney Marie Andrews, The Jayhawks and Damien Jurado and has been featured in KEXP, NPR, Aftonbladet, Uncut, Radio France, BBC just to name a few.
"And this time I've been good at keeping the songs and lyrics open, picking up and changing and swapping up until we actually recorded."
Thomas gathered some of his best musician friends for the studio sessions. Producer and multi instrumentalist Carl Edlom, cellist Helena Arlock and jazz musician Bebe Risenfors have left big impressions in the catalog before. Svante Sjöblom is new behind the drums, he also plays with Christian Kjellvander and Sofia Karlsson. In addition, Alina Björkén (Könsförrädare/Tiny Oceans) will be guesting on "Winter of '85-'86", L.T. Fisk plays the piano on "Look What You Made Me Do" and Mats Bäcker, best known as a photographer, will be laying down saxophone on "White Denim". The album's cover photo was taken by Serbian photographer Aleksa Jovanovic.
1st single, "Years Of Depression", out now.
