"In ancient Ireland it wasn’t uncommon for sickly children who failed to thrive to be deemed 'changelings', the belief being that the once healthy child had been switched with a fairy infant. Children who were viewed as uncommonly beautiful, in Ireland that being fair haired and blue eyed, were considered to be at a higher risk of being ‘snatched’. I wrote this song from the perspective of a new mother, who in a fit of postpartum psychosis believes her child is a changeling and drowns her. Though not a happy subject matter, my hope is that this song will help shine a light on the very real affliction that is postpartum psychosis, which still leads to cases of infanticide in our present day. This song is also partially inspired by Christy Moore’s beautiful version of ‘The Well Below The Valley’ and Kate Bush’s ‘The Kick Inside’." ~ Kyle Carey
