“An overwhelming, thunderous, almost continuously astonishing achievement” ~ Los Angeles Times
Released in 1969, The Who’s legendary "Tommy" album seemed tailor made for the silverscreen treatment, and that’s exactly what it received in 1975, when director Ken Russell brought Pete Townshend’s story of the deaf, dumb and blind pinball wizard, Tommy Walker, to life in a madcap rock opera that has gone down in history as one of The Who’s finest achievements.
Starring Roger Daltry as the titular Tommy, and featuring memorably unhinged performances from Tina Turner, Elton John and Keith Moon, plus Hollywood royalty Ann Margret and Oliver Reed, the "Tommy" movie was praised by The New York Times as 'the last word in pop art'. Never a band to do things by halves, The Who also entirely re-recorded the Tommy songs for a brand new film soundtrack, with the cast members playing their parts to perfection, both on screen and in the studio.
Packaging the DVD film and CD soundtrack together with repro press packs, a facsimile of the Japanese film programme, German and UK lobby cards, and promotional photos and posters, this box set ups the ante on 'the last word in pop art' and presents the last word on a landmark moment in rock cinema.
Expect Tina Turner burning it up as the "Acid Queen", Elton John unleashing multi ball mayhem on "Pinball Wizard" and Roger Daltrey leading his devotees through "See Me, Feel Me". You’d be deaf, dumb and blind to miss it.
To be released March 17th, 2023.
